Childcare | Starfish

3 months to 12 months

StarfishOur Starfish room is the base for our youngest children within the Nursery. The babies within this room are between 3 months and 12 months old; they tend to be non-mobile.

The ratio within this room is 1:3.  Starfish have access to their own cot room as well as a range of bouncers and swings for them to rest and relax in.  They have a dedicated black and white area as well as a heuristic area; complete with cardboard boxes and lots of sensory equipment.

Within Starfish one of the main focuses is positive relationships and settling in, we encourage the babies to develop strong bonds with their key person and support them in doing so. Starfish participate in a range of different activities most of which are based upon tactile experiences, personal social, emotional, physical and communicational development. The Starfish all tend to have slightly different routines and individual requirements; this is thoroughly discussed during their initial transition.

Within the Starfish room there is a dedicated area for changing nappies, as well as a fully functioning kitchen complete with microwave, fridge, bottle warmer and steriliser.

Starfish follow the general topic of the under 2’s unit as well individualised planning and specific interests based upon their development.

Within each of the under 2’s rooms your child will be provided with a daily communication sheet that will be completed throughout the day, this will be shared with you upon collection. During the day the staff will record what your child has had to eat and drink and how much they have had, their sleeps will be noted down, what their nappies have been, as well as any bumps or medication, any replenishment needed and a general overview of what they have been up to.

All parents, carers, visitors and staff are asked to remove their shoes before entering the baby unit; shoes can be worn on the wooden floor but must be removed when on the carpet; we ask that children be provided with a pair of labeled slippers for both comfort and cleanliness.

Within the Under 2’s unit we focus on developing the 3 Prime Areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS):

  • Communication and Language
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development

These prime areas are the most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning.
